Adding Weathervanes: Shapes and Styles for Your Home

Composed of two halves of hammered copper soldered together, weathervanes draw attention to the roof of your home or building. These copper and brass shapes have a long history, however. While used primarily for décor in the present, weathervanes were needed to indicate the direction of the wind. Over time, this practical use was compounded with design, and the shapes of certain weathervanes became associated with specific establishments or businesses.

In the present, weathervanes come in all shapes and sizes. Roosters, grasshoppers, and horses are some of the traditional designs. Roosters, once called “weather cocks,” were associated with the Catholic Church for several centuries. In the ninth century, the Pope decreed that all churches display weather cocks to symbolize the events taking place after the last supper. (more…)

Is wicker furniture only for the porch? While the most prominent pieces may be outside, wicker furniture is, in fact, designed for every room in the home. But like any other type of furniture, wicker needs to match the space, and what works well on your patio may not in your living room. If you are thinking about adding wicker furniture, consider the following tips.

Always consider your existing décor. While wicker furniture can make a space more casual and comfortable, it can also look out of place. How you style it can make or break a room. Like any other wood furniture, wicker comes in a variety of finishes, including white. Find one that blends in with the décor you already have in place, be it darker walls or a lighter carpet. Wicker furniture should not create too much contrast.

How much of the space will be wicker? Furniture sets made entirely out of wicker are possible and, replacing your existing pieces, fully overhaul the look of the room. But do you really want this, or are you simply looking for a casual accent? While a wicker furniture set for a living room, for example, as a sofa, chairs, and a coffee table made out of rattan, a dining area can easily become slightly more casual with rattan bar stools.
